Header-ache Pt. 2

13 Jul

I got the lumber for the new header today. After work, I built the header by cutting the 2×8 down to 40 inches, and then ripping two pieces of 1/4″ plywood to 7 1/4″ so they match the 2×8. I sandwiched the two 1/4″ pieces between two 2x8s to make a piece that is 3 1/2″ to match the 2×4 studding. (A 2×4 is 1 1/2″ by 3 1/2″ )

Once I had the 40″ header unit built, I was able to trim it down to 38 3/4″ to fit the spot it was going in. A bit of hammering and work with the prybar and it was in…

It’s actually just wedged in there for now. Tomorrow we’ll secure it place with a bunch of nails and then support it with two new 2x4s on each side. We’ll then fill in with two more 2x4s below the header to take up the extra space to get the top of the rough opening to match the height of the sliding door. If we’re really good, we’ll get that done, get the wall sheeted, put up the Tyvek, then the Flexwrap flashing, and then pop in this little guy…
