Inspection Number One

6 Jul

Today is our first visit from the Building Department for our “excavation” inspection. The holes we dug for the footings need to be inspected prior to filling them with concrete.

The holes are all three feet deep (at least) and are supposed to be down to undisturbed dirt. In some of the holes the post hole digger would just keep digging, so in order to accomplish this, we just wanted to remove the loose soil. My brother, Chris, developed the odd method of shop-vacing the dirt out of the hole, and it actually worked pretty well. A shop vac full of actual dirt is pretty heavy but luckily it was just dirt so we could dump it back on the ground instead of loading it into garbage bags.
